In Soweto, Jerry Selwane is an unstoppable force, saving and rehabilitating injured and abandoned animals in his community. Through Soweto's Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SARAC), he is on a mission to revolutionise animal welfare, one rescue at a time. Jerry's journey began more than two decades ago when he worked for the SPCA. But he soon realised that much more was needed to combat animal cruelty. So, he took a bold leap, pouring his heart (and life savings) into SARAC. But Jerry's vision extends far beyond rescuing animals. He's now cultivating a new generation of animal advocates, aptly called Jerryโs Rangers.

On 21 October 2023 - as the Springboks beat England in the Rugby World Cup semi-finals in Paris - across the world on the coast of South Africa, an injured, barnacle-covered turtle washed up on Struisbaai beach. She was rescued by a local who contacted the Turtle Rescue Network. The turtle was in severe distress and some believed it wouldnโt be alive for much longer. Over several weeks, volunteers tried to save the turtle, which was also missing a flipper. But the frightened animal was resilient and within months, the team could see a substantial improvement in her health. Buoyed by her fighting spirit, the team aptly named her โBokkieโ in honour of the mighty Springboks.

Four out of five boys in South Africa grow up without a positive male role model. The consequences can be devastating: low self-esteem, poor academic performance, and depression. But a non-profit is trying to change that. The Character Company provides mentors for boys across South Africa, changing their lives and futures. It might look like a free meal for cormorants and fish eagles, but the dam โ once home to hundreds of indigenous fish species โ has become dangerously polluted. New research shows that the Apies River, which flows from Pretoria into the dam, is full of pharmaceutical drugs including antidepressants, as well as cocaine and tik. But that hasnโt stopped criminal syndicates from poaching the fish and selling it for human consumption. Now, unsuspecting consumers are eating fish that could pose serious health risks. Carte Blanche joins an anti-poaching unit on patrol.

On the outskirts of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Lucky Nxumalo, a self-taught welder, is using chess to transform his community. Lucky's passion for the game is giving local children a chance to develop their minds and discover new possibilities. After years of seeking government support to teach chess, Luckyโs dream remained out of reach. It wasnโt until a chance encounter with a stranger that his vision began to take shape. With some support, the Hlulabantu Chess Garden was created: a space where local kids gather to learn and play. Despite earning modestly, Lucky teaches chess for free, believing the game sharpens strategic thinking and can lead to a brighter future for his community. Through one manโs unwavering dedication, the simple game of chess is becoming a powerful tool for education and empowerment in an area where opportunities are few.

As they battle to maintain an iron grip on the public transport market, taxi operators say that carpooling and lift clubs are impacting their bottom line, robbing them of potential clients. And, as the threats escalate, all motorists with more than one passenger in their vehicle could become targets.

In an antique building on the main street of Calvinia in the heart of the Hantam Karoo, 91-year-old Oom Frans Hugo shuffles from his desk to the large cardboard printouts on another table. He carefully cuts out a black-and-white photograph and sticks it just below the newspaper headline that heโs working on. This is the newsroom where, for decades, Oom Frans has been patiently producing three weekly newspapers: The Messenger, Die Noordwester and Die Owernuus. As the future of print news hangs in the balance, and the journalism profession faces an existential crisis, Oom Frans seems unaffected. Once a week, he sets off before daybreak to drive 1200 km in a single day, personally delivering his popular newspapers to readers across the region.

Five years ago, Mika Abrahams was racing F1 cars on a video game with his friends. Now, the 16-year-old is on the brink of making history. This young Johannesburg talent is set to become the first South African to race in Formula 1 since Jody Scheckter, the 1979 World Champion. Mikaโs skill and determination have taken him from karting in South Africa to racing in Europe. His impressive career includes a standout season in the Danish F4 Championship, where he secured nine podiums in 15 starts. In 2023, he competed in the British F4 championship, earning 1st and 2nd place finishes. Mika also earned the prestigious SA Protea National Colours. We take to the circuit with this rising star.

Sybil Visagie is a force to be reckoned with. As a sheep farmer in the heart of the Hantam Karoo, sheโs been helping other farmers get back on their feet after a devastating, nearly decade-long drought. But as the farmers in this part of the country are starting to recover, they face another major challenge: getting their product to the market. The roads of the Hantam and Namaqua districts have been neglected by government for years; today, they are inaccessible. When the scarce rains come, the roads turn into rivers, cutting the farmers off from the rest of the country. Now, the logistics companies that move products like meat and wool are refusing to make collections from farms. Farmers say it means working for no pay for months on end while, for customers, the price of lamb is skyrocketing.

It's an idyllic vision: a bushveld holiday town where human residents and wild animals live as neighbours. Marloth Park, bordering the Kruger National Park, was established in 1977 as an enclosed suburb made of large residential stands interspersed with parklands for grazing, with animals coming and going across the Crocodile River as they pleased. But nearly 50 years later, the border with the Kruger has been fenced off, the town is overpopulated and overgrazed, and mismanagement and infighting prevail. A culling programme was stopped in 2017 amidst concerns for residentsโ safety. Today, no one can agree on a way to end the stalemate. Can the promised bushveld haven be salvaged?

At just 12 years old, Limpopoโs Kgothatso Montjane - who was born with a congenital deformity - had her leg amputated. But she refused to be deterred. An energetic child with big dreams, she first pursued competitive ballroom and Latin American dance, despite her disability. That is until her schoolteachers introduced her to wheelchair tennis. It was a decision that would change her life and see her become one of the country's best players. Now, sheโs a three-time wheelchair tennis grand slam champion and sheโs eager to pay it forward and give other athletes the same opportunities to succeed.

It was an ambitious climb into uncharted territory. A treacherous 15-day ascent on the icy slopes of Mount Putha Hiunchuli in the Himalayas. But a determined group of South Africans, aptly nicknamed the Madswimmers, were undeterred in their mission to complete the highest altitude swim ever recorded. The team โ made up of people with no experience climbing steep mountains โ faced harsh icy conditions, battled wind and snow, and navigated dangerous crevasses that threatened to collapse beneath them. Their reward? A three-minute-long dip in chillingly cold water to set a new world record. Carte Blanche travelled to Kathmandu to meet up with the Madswimmers.

In South Africa, the smuggling of undocumented foreign nationals into the country has reached a crisis point. In March, our months-long investigation into human trafficking revealed how thousands of people without legitimate identity documents and passports are transported on long-haul buses across our porous borders before theyโre trafficked by criminal syndicates. Following our investigation, police are cracking down on the criminals responsible for producing and distributing fake travel documents. With exclusive access, Carte Blanche joined an early morning police raid conducted in cooperation with the Department of Home Affairs. Their target: the suspected hideout of a syndicate allegedly responsible for forging passports, asylum seeker permits and visas.

In Linden - a small Johannesburg suburb - Clement Tebruggo has become a familiar figure. He often spends his days queuing at a nearby church for a plate of food. Linden is one of the few communities that offers sanctuary to homeless people, providing them with a place of safety and regular meals. Hundreds of people who find themselves living on handouts now flock to this neighbourhood and, for some residents, itโs a major problem. In surrounding suburbs, the influx of homeless people has seen a rise in crime and sometimes abandoned buildings are taken over and transformed into informal settlements. As the numbers spike throughout the country, Carte Blanche asks how the challenge of homelessness should be confronted.

In a community stadium in Nkowankowa, Limpopo a group of soccer players converges on the field and the game begins. But this is no ordinary football match. Among the players is eighty-something-year-old Mama Annah โBullโ Bvuma, known as a fierce defender. Like her, the other players are all elderly and, while they might seem frail, theyโre just as competitive as athletes half (or even a third) their age. The Vakhegula Vakhegula football club has become a firm favourite with both local and international spectators. Many of these women have travelled around the world playing in the Soccer Grannies World Championships. Carte Blanche meets the old ladies from rural communities who are taking to the beautiful game.

In the heart of the Eastern Cape, a group of White-backed and Cape vultures survey their new home. These birds are part of a group of 163 vultures moved from Vulpro, a sanctuary at Hartbeespoort in the North West, to a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape. In Africaโs largest vulture relocation, truckloads of the raptors were captured and driven over a thousand kilometres to the unspoilt wilderness at Shamwari Private Game Reserve. The new bespoke facility will focus on rehabilitation and captive breeding programmes, with the goal of releasing new generations of vultures back into the wild. Carte Blanche followed them on their long trek to their new home.

In September, a South African lion farmer sent a shipment of ten healthy lions to the East Asian country of Laos โ a sale that raised the alarm for animal activists. In Laos, tigers have been hunted to extinction, but their body parts are still in high demand in traditional medicine and used in a fine wine. But with the supply in the tiger bone market shrinking, alternatives are being sought in South Africa. Activists believe that the shipment of lions was destined to be killed to feed the countryโs growing tiger bone industry. Itโs a complex story where lion bones are used to supplement the tiger bone market. But was the farmer aware that the shipment of lions would be killed in Laos? Carte Blanche investigates and what we find, suggests that these lions were deliberately sent to their deaths.

Mpho and Flenters are unusual companions. One is an orphaned rhino calf and the other a sheep with a little attitude. At a secret location in the bush, Mpho is just one of a crash of orphaned rhino calves saved from certain death by a non-profit rhino orphanage. Many of them lost their mothers to poaching and, in the wild, young rhino are completely incapable of caring for themselves. They will either fall prey to predators or eat dirt to survive. At this orphanage, the budding friendship between Mpho and Flenters is getting all the attention. Staff at the orphanage hope that, with Flentersโ help, Mpho might one day return to the wild.
