Clear and present danger Image : 17344
Clear and present dangerFrom teachers to tennis, water polo and gymnastics coaches, weโ€™ve investigated many alleged sexual predators over the years. Itโ€™s a traumatic reality that many have preyed on schoolgoers. So, youโ€™d think that government would be doing all it can to ensure people already found guilty of these horrendous crimes, didnโ€™t find their way back into our schools. Shockingly, through a collaboration with investigative organisation Viewfinder, we discover thatโ€™s far from the case. For the full story, get DStv Stream Premium: https://bit.ly/DStv-Stream

Because weโ€™re about to give you a sneak peek into the story behind the stories. From the tension of investigating organised crime to the fluffed lines, or the high of being on a new adventure to making a plan when everything goes wrong. In the shadows of South Africa's spiritual landscape, a sinister practice is claiming lives: exorcisms gone wrong. In KwaZulu-Natal, one family is demanding justice after the tragic death of their 17-year-old daughter. Prior to her death, Thozama Sonjica's family suspected that her uncharacteristic disobedience and bad behaviour signalled something far more sinister. They suspected that she, along with her group of friends, may be possessed by demonic forces. The local pastor confirmed their worst fears โ€“ the devil was at work โ€“ and he ordered an exorcism be performed on the children. But during the ritual, something went horribly wrong. Five days later and after enduring prolonged torture at the hands of her tormentors, Thozama succumbed to her injuries. But this isnโ€™t an isolated incident in South Africa. Carte Blanche goes inside the secretive world of so-called Exorcisms.

Standing in the dock at the Palm Ridge Magistrateโ€™s Court, Sifiso Mkhwanazi is an ordinary figure, just one of several hundred criminals who have appeared before Judge Cassim Moosa for sentencing. But his casual demeanour conceals a ruthless, violent serial killer - one of the youngest recorded in South Africa - who terrorised sex workers in downtown Johannesburg. After a series of gruesome murders sent shockwaves through the community, Mkhwanazi emerged as the shadowy figure behind the killings. As investigators dug deeper, they painted a chilling portrait of a man driven by dark impulses and a twisted sense of retribution. Carte Blanche asks: What drove a soft-spoken young man to become one of the countryโ€™s most prolific serial killers?

On a private game reserve in Limpopo, an adult elephant gleefully takes his first step into a mud bath as a group of delighted observers cheers him on. Itโ€™s a taste of freedom for Duma the elephant, and a victory for the conservationists who have worked tirelessly to get this much-loved retiree into his new home. But Duma wasnโ€™t always known by this name. For decades, he was Charley, spending much of his life as a circus performer before becoming the star attraction at the National Zoo in Pretoria. For the last three years, he has been the only elephant at the zoo. Now, after a nationwide petition to retire Charley, and months of meticulous planning, he has finally reached his new home. Cosmo City in Gauteng is governmentโ€™s flagship mega city housing development. Initiated in 2001, itโ€™s home to tens of thousands of residents living in well-built, mixed-income housing units. It has schools, parks, shopping malls, and churches: a haven for many people in need of housing. In 2014, government attempted to recreate the success of Cosmo City, investing billions of rands into dozens of so-called mega cities across the country. Montrose Mega City Development, on the outskirts of former gold mining town Randfontein, is one of them. It shouldโ€™ve been a state-of-the-art home, place of work and transport hub for residents of nearby informal settlements. But it seems one shady developer secured the multi-billion rand tender... then disappeared, leaving a trail of unpaid contractors and incomplete buildings. Carte Blanche investigates. Naudรฉ was arriving at her hotel parking lot in Durban North when two gunmen opened fire, wounding her three times in the upper body, neck and face: all in broad daylight. Naudรฉ survived, but she is still in a critical condition in hospital. This brazen assassination attempt is just one in a long line of hits on prominent investigators: detectives, liquidators, and even city officials. Powerful suspects are no longer simply silencing whistleblowers, but setting their sights on investigators as well and threatening the rule of law. The drug, which is a weekly injection that helps to lower blood sugar levels, has an unintended side effect: slowing digestion and encouraging people to eat less. Thousands of Ozempic users from around the world are calling it a weight loss miracle, having shed kilogrammes after just a few weeks on the drug. But as more people turn to Ozempic for weight loss, the drug is becoming harder to find, and diabetes patients are paying the price. Rampant poaching has decimated our rhino populations, so itโ€™s understandable that any plan aimed at fighting the scourge would be welcomed. Even more so, if it delivered meaningful results like the arrest of those behind the syndicates driving the trade in rhino horn. That was the thinking behind a scheme in KZN โ€“ a poaching hotspot โ€“ that rewarded operatives for bringing down the masterminds and their foot soldiers. But our next investigation reveals how a campaign that started with good intentions was allegedly overrun by people with questionable agendas โ€“ and with terrible consequences. In the last 16 years, its highly specialised members have tracked down and arrested some of the countryโ€™s most wanted criminals. Three assailants pulled him from his bicycle and attempted to saw off his leg with a chainsaw. They cut through meat and bone, leaving the limb barely attached to his body. Then, as suddenly as the attack began, his attackers disappeared into the darkness. Doctors managed to save his leg and Mhlengi bravely fought back to full recovery โ€“ only to lose his leg to infection two years later. Desperate to fulfil his dreams of becoming a champion triathlete, Mhlengi had to start all over again โ€“ this time, learning how to walk with one leg before he could swim, run and cycle. In the Eastern Cape, thousands of talented young athletes with the potential to be tomorrowโ€™s sports heroes donโ€™t have access to proper facilities. In villages across the province, netball courts, rugby fields and athletics tracks are a rare sight. So, when the provincial government promised the rural community of Sakhisizwe that it would build a new multi-million rand stadium, it was a welcome development. Fast forward several years and the much-anticipated high-performance centre is little more than an abandoned field. But Sakhisizwe is not the only community thatโ€™s been promised new or refurbished facilities costing millions, only for developers to pocket the money and fail to deliver. In this election campaign, Carte Blanche crisscrosses the province, tracking several costly infrastructure projects in one of the poorest parts of the country, and finds a trail of broken promises. Waste picker to graduate Image : 16373
Waste picker to graduateOn the streets of Johannesburg, waste pickers have become a familiar sight. Theyโ€™re an army of recyclers, often homeless, who sort through the cityโ€™s growing rubbish piles. Their working conditions are harsh and living on the streets is brutal. But Gibson Nzimande, a young man with a lifelong dream to become a university professor, didnโ€™t allow his dire circumstances to prevent him from reaching for two university degrees. He had nowhere to live but, with the help of a bursary to pay for his fees, he spent every night at a nearby petrol station studying to achieve qualifications that few South Africans can dream of, let alone afford. A normal day at home for eight-year-old Lelitha Jantjies turned into a nightmare when the family dog viciously attacked her, severely injuring her face. After multiple procedures to stitch her wounds and fight off an infection, the little girl was left with terrible scars and the emotional wounds inflicted by some uncaring schoolmates. Last year, medical specialist, Dr Ansua Steyn, heard about Lelithaโ€™s plight and felt compelled to help. It was the start of something special as Dr Steyn, together with some of her colleagues, operated on Lelithaโ€™s scars and slowly helped the little girl regain her confidence. In a quiet office in Johannesburg, Captain Keshi Mabunda mulls over a docket. Itโ€™s a startling murder case: a woman who allegedly killed two of her relatives to collect multi-million rand payouts from their life insurance policies. This investigation is eerily similar to another case that Mabunda solved, and SAPS top brass have requested his assistance. In 2021, Mabunda was instrumental in the investigation that led to the arrest and conviction of notorious serial murderer, Rosemary Ndlovu. But even for a seasoned police officer, this is a dangerous job and the bodyguards who occasionally accompany him suggest that Mabundaโ€™s life is on the line. The City of Johannesburg (COJ) is building an informal settlement for displaced residents. With a 500 000 housing backlog, the city has repeatedly failed to deliver on its housing projects, leaving thousands of residents without adequate homes. Last year, when 77 people died in a massive blaze at the Usindiso building downtown, the cityโ€™s skewed priorities and lack of preparedness were exposed. Every municipality is required to provide temporary shelters for residents caught in a major disaster โ€“ but the COJ hadnโ€™t made any arrangements. So, it built 300 one-room, paper-thin tin shacks at an eye-watering R4.2 million. But should shacks cost ratepayers millions of rands? Carte Blanche investigates. Water shedding: Paying for air Image : 16244
Water shedding: Paying for airJohannesburg ratepayers are fed up. For years, residents have fought the City over exorbitant municipal bills. Then the municipality implemented what it calls โ€œwater shiftingโ€: switching off some suburbsโ€™ water to supply others. This left residents without water for hours and sometimes even days at a time. But instead of water bills decreasing, many increased dramatically. In several cases, desperate residents checked their meters and found them spinning out of control despite there being no water in the pipes. Carte Blanche investigates why scores of households are literally paying for the air in their water pipes, instead of the water they consume. Josh Crickmayโ€™s story could have ended quite differently were it not for the unique and life-altering intervention of his parents, Kathy and Andrew. The diagnosis was the turning point for Kathy and Andrew who decided that saving their only child meant taking drastic steps as a family. They quit their jobs to take him on a โ€œBirding Big Yearโ€: 365 days to spot and document 1000 species of birds.
