On Robben Island, the small colony of African Penguins is often difficult to spot. Worldwide, global warming has taken its toll on this endangered species, its impact most evident in the birdsโ€™ dwindling numbers - even on this island haven. The surviving colony has become an iconic feature, with visitors strictly prohibited from accessing their position. In fact, Yandisa Cwecwe is one of only a handful of people whoโ€™ve been granted unfettered access. She's the island's lone penguin ranger, her sole purpose is to look after the penguins... and she isnโ€™t giving up on their survival just yet. Every morning, Yandisa collects crucial data for researchers and ensures the safety and security of the remaining breeding pairs that call the island home. It happened without warning: a security breach at the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), the state pathology service which has become the backbone of the countryโ€™s healthcare services. In June this year, a major cyberattack targeted vulnerable points in the NHLS, denying it access to its own IT systems and infrastructure. The ransomware attack was so destructive that the organisationโ€™s systems have remained inaccessible for over a month, denying 80% of South Africans access to their medical records. Around the country, thousands of surgeries have been cancelled as doctors scramble to access patient information and test results. But this isnโ€™t the first security breach on an organisation providing a critical service: globally, similar cyberattacks on major hospitals in Europe and Africa are on the rise. But that hasnโ€™t deterred Mackenzie Knott, a sporty 11-year-old with a passion for animals and the outdoors. Determined to raise funds for the care of rhino orphans, Mackenzie has taken on the gruelling 13 Peaks Challenge every year since she was just eight years old. But while political adversaries appear to be burying the hatchet at national level, old and new fault lines threaten to scupper this fragile political marriage of convenience. In Gauteng, the failure to form a representative GNU is a symptom of deeper and darker political contests beneath the surface. Carte Blanche tests the waters with South Africaโ€™s ministerial newbies, to establish the strength and nature of the glue in the GNU โ€“ and to ask: on whose shoulders will success ultimately rest? It was a case out of Alaska in the United States that gained international attention back in 2019: the discovery of a memory card containing footage of a brutal murder. The man behind the horrific crime was South African, Brian Steven Smith, a newly naturalised US citizen who had documented himself strangling a native Alaskan woman to death in a hotel room. Heโ€™d later confess to the murder of another Alaskan woman a year earlier. In February, Smith was convicted on 14 charges, including two counts of murder. He now awaits his fate in a US jail. Carte Blanche tracks his journey from the streets of Komani in the Eastern Cape to his gruesome murders in Alaska. It was a clear day off the coast of Cape Town. A deep-sea fishing trawler carrying twenty crew was fishing for hake. But within hours, something catastrophic happened on the boat, causing it to sink in under five minutes. Nine fishermen survived. But 11 others were trapped inside and disappeared beneath the waves. One survivor claims the vessel had returned to port with engine trouble the previous day and sat there for fourteen hours before heading back out to sea. With many unanswered questions and an official investigation underway, Carte Blanche examines the final moments of the doomed vessel and speaks to families desperate for the return of their loved ones' remains. Cape fur seals are generally curious and friendly sea mammals. They are often found lazing around in Western Cape harbours and diving sites, and theyโ€™ve become a common sight on our beaches. But in recent years, there has been a significant increase in unprovoked attacks on people both in the water and onshore. Experts say this behaviour is unusual because seals usually attack only when theyโ€™re protecting their young. Now eight seals, including a pup that attacked five surfers in May this year, have tested positive for the deadly rabies virus: the first recorded cases in seals since 1981. Scientists, veterinarians and marine authorities are confounded, and companies that used to snorkel with seals have closed shop. The ANC has been the governing party in South Africa for 30 years โ€“ gaining majorities in each election since 1994. Until now. A poor record of service delivery, staggering unemployment, corruption, and rising crime have seen the ANC's popularity wane. And in last monthโ€™s national election, its support plummeted to just over 40 per cent. The loss of faith in the ANC comes as former President Jacob Zuma capitalises on a surge of popularity for his MK Party, which has captured the hearts, minds and votes of the people of KwaZulu-Natal and, to a degree, Gauteng. Itโ€™s a catastrophic result for the humbled ANC which now forces it to consider governing nationally in coalition for the first time in its history. For the next ten days, critical discussions will happen behind closed doors while anxious South Africans await a result. Carte Blanche examines why this shift has happened, and how it might shape the future of governance in our country for the next five years. Dewald van der Westhuizen used to be an avid cyclist. He was a regular on Cape Town roads, training with his coach for the coveted IRONMAN championship. But all that changed in December last year when he was run over by an allegedly drunk driver. His injuries were horrific, leaving Dewald fighting for his life. The driver was arrested several hours later and charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless and negligent driving, and attempted murder. His licence was revoked. But shockingly, less than six months later, his bail conditions were relaxed and his licence returned. Sadly, this isnโ€™t an isolated case. Some reports indicate that motorists who hit cyclists are often let off with little more than a slap on the wrist. This Sunday, Carte Blanche asks whether cyclists subjected to the worst examples of reckless driving are being denied proper justice. In KwaZulu-Natal, commercial farmers are on edge. While they own the land they farm on, government owns the minerals that lie underneath, and itโ€™s giving scores of upstart coal companies prospecting licences and rights to mine. Tensions between farmers and mining groups in Newcastle are at an all-time high as the coal prospectors move in by the dozen to mine whatโ€™s left of the areaโ€™s coal reserve. For farmers, whatโ€™s equally concerning is the risk to vital water sources like the townโ€™s main dam that provides drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people. Final approval will be needed from national government before construction can go ahead. But if it does, restaurants, curio shops and an adventure centre will be built in this picturesque nature reserve. As the public participation process got underway, things got ugly on social media between those in favour and those against. The developers say this is the largest single investment into Franschhoek in many years and will create jobs and uplift the town, but many residents are not convinced. Years of mismanagement, poor service delivery and a failing municipal council have torn at the fabric of what was once a seaside haven. But itโ€™s not just on the streets that the crisis is visible: The Knysna estuary, the most biodiverse in the country, is now under serious threat from the failure of water treatment in the adjacent town. While the rot set in some time ago, a change in the local administration to an ANC-led multi-party coalition appears to have accelerated the townโ€™s decline over the past year. As Knysna faces bankruptcy, Carte Blanche investigates what caused the downfall of one of the countryโ€™s most celebrated tourist destinations.

Three days after their disappearance, their lifeless bodies were pulled out of a water-filled quarry at an abandoned property in the middle of Stellies. But this tragedy was decades in the making. The infamous 77 Bird Street had been a problem property for over 30 years. Initially intended to be turned into a block of flats, the owners excavated the property to build basement parking but permit issues with the City halted construction, leaving a deep, unfinished pit. As water filled the quarry, this prime real estate remained unsecured. Over the years, several requests for the owners and the municipality to attend to the problem were ignored. Now, more than a year since their untimely deaths, the teens' families are baying for justice.โ€ฏโ€ฏ Find more exclusive content on Carte Blanche: The Podcast: https://linktr.ee/carteblanchetv
