𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟰 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. The Carte Blanche Making A Difference Trust has a longstanding relationship with Sebokeng Regional Hospital. In the last decade, the Trust has built two paediatric high-care wards at Sebokeng, but they’re operating beyond capacity. Meanwhile, at Sebokeng - as at other regional hospitals - children are traumatised by their exposure to violence and illness in the emergency department they share with the community's adults. So the Trust stepped in again. In 2023, construction began on a first-of-its-kind Paediatric Emergency Unit, where children will be treated by specialist doctors using equipment designed for their tiny bodies. This week, the Trust proudly unveiled the completed, state-of-the-art facility and handed it over to the hospital, its community and, most importantly, its children.

Earlier this year, the so-called construction mafia threatened to derail the build, forcing the Trust to ramp up security and fight back against attempts to sabotage this critical project. But with the support of hospital management and the dedication of its team, the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust is ensuring that this life-saving facility becomes a reality for Sebokeng’s youngest and most vulnerable patients. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟳 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮. The Carte Blanche Making A Difference Trust has handed over the first phases of a Neonatal Unit and a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape. The two phases constitute the construction and equipping of a Cardiothoracic ICU and an Isolation ICU. Tygerberg hospital attends to over half of the most critically ill children in the Western Cape, and, thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, the Trust has additionally ordered a child-friendly ultrasound machine to assist in the visualisation of the placement of intravenous lines. Among other significant benefits, the specialised surgical instrumentation purchased by the Trust for the new units has enabled the reinstatement of cardiothoracic surgical services at the hospital. Research shows that children of teen mothers are pre-disposed to birth defects for a variety of reasons, including socio-economic ones. And doctors at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital say disorders are becoming more common - so no better time to receive a brand new ICU from the Carte Blanche Making A Difference campaign to treat babies desperately in need of specialised treatment. A special broadcast from Durban, where things will never be the same at King Edward VIII Hospital. That’s thanks to BHP Billiton and the Carte Blanche Making a Difference campaign who have handed over to the Department of Health a brand new hospital, financed by the private sector. East London’s Frere Hospital serves some of the country’s most desperate communities. When Carte Blanche visited the hospital in 2011, children were being operated on in under-resourced adult theatres while an abandoned operating theatre suite was being used as a storage facility. Funded by the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Campaign, the hospital now boasts two new state of the art dedicated paediatric operating theatres complete with Recovery and Nurses stations, management offices, sterilisation rooms and more. For 13 years and, together with its generous partners and donors, the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust has managed to make light work of building and capacitating critical care facilities for children in 11 state hospitals in South Africa. Through this process, thousands of young lives in the country have been assisted. Now, the Trust has embarked on yet another ambitious project by adding a brand new Lower-High Care Unit at the Sebokeng Regional Hospital in Gauteng – once again making a difference in those families living in a struggling community.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝟱 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭. Efficient, well-resourced and a safe place for children – the highly anticipated expanded Paediatric Lower High Care Unit at Sebokeng Regional Hospital has been delivered by the Carte Blanche Making A Difference Trust. With the tremendous support of its donors and partners, the Trust has added a new, adjunct eight-bed ward. Now, doctors and nurses at this public facility can continue providing seriously ill children in the area with the best care and treatment.

This November, the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust handed over a brand new, eight-bed Paediatric Lower High Care Ward at Sebokeng District Hospital, south of Johannesburg. Recipients and donors alike were alight with praise and hope for what lies ahead for this essential public health hospital. The Trust has delivered over 20 projects in 13 years – thanks to the commitment of principal project partner, South32 and long-term partners like Sakhiwo and the Hospital Design Group.

Carte Blanche visits the specialised teams that are working around the clock on the 19th project of the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust – a state-of-the-art two-bed cardiothoracic neonatal and paediatric intensive care unit for children with congenital heart, chest or lung conditions in Cape Town’s Tygerberg Hospital. More than 7000 babies are born here every year and a fifth will need surgical procedures. We thank the project partners and sponsors whose generosity and vision sustain the work.

From paraffin stoves, open flames to candles falling over – the chances of a child suffering severe burns increases in poorly developed areas and is a common reality in South Africa. Now the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust together with its valued partners and donors, have stepped in to create a custom designed Paediatric Burns Unit at Ngwelezana Hospital, which is a key referral centre for many children in KwaZulu-Natal. This facility aims to provide the highest level of care for children suffering from severe burn injuries.

The neonatal unit at Sebokeng Hospital, one of the largest regional hospitals in Gauteng, is the only unit taking in babies from the surrounding areas as well as patients referred from other provinces. Adding to the significant patient burden is the fact that this neonatal unit has only been able to accommodate babies up to 28 days old, compromising their care thereafter. But there is hope. The Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust’s new sophisticated Infant High Care Ward is saving tiny lives. Aired on 25 November 2016.

The JPCCC has provided counselling and support to children and their families since 1944. The organisation operates from offices and schools in Johannesburg and Soweto. It has also expanded its services to the Schaumburg informal settlement in the North West Province, where JPCCC serves a large community beset by high unemployment and a heavy HIV/Aids burden. The local Schaumburg preschool was housed in a container donated by the Coca Cola Foundation and the Bright Kids Foundation, situated on grounds belonging to the Lutheran Mission School. In 2008, Carte Blanche undertook to reflect JPCCC’s interventions and told the story of some of the children living in the informal settlement of Schaumburg, including families headed by orphans.

We bring you up to date with our 'making a difference' birthday campaign, which has enabled Carte Blanche to give back to the wider South African community after so many years of support. The generosity of the viewing public has far exceeded our expectations, with corporate sponsors donating millions to a campaign in which every rand counts to changing the lives of the children who will become tomorrow's leaders and future Carte Blanche viewers.

It's almost three years since the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Campaign was launched and, from modest beginnings, it's gone on to become one of the biggest charities in the country, with a total of over R75-million. The paediatric units of several State hospitals have been completely transformed, and still the work continues. Carte Blanche catches up. 

In 2008 Carte Blanche launched a campaign to raise R20-million to refurbish six State hospitals. We've more than trebled that amount and this week we focus on the Kimberley Hospital Complex where a private public partnership has completely transformed the paediatric ICU. Carte Blanche makes a difference.

The paediatric unit at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital now not only provides some of the best surgeons in the world, but state of the art facilities and equipment. A Brainz BRM3 monitor, a Lodox machine, new doctors' rooms, and a high care ward are among donations made to this hospital via the Carte Blanche 'Making A Difference' campaign. And most important, as Carte Blanche Medical reports, it's made a huge difference for the tiniest of patients.

Carte Blanche has been making a difference for 20 years. To celebrate two decades of broadcasting, M-Net's flagship current affairs show will be launching an initiative to give back to communities through a series of programmes that will benefit South African hospitals and children.

But the difference it’s made to little lives and the doctors and nursing staff involved cannot be measured.
