If Januworry is keeping you home, don’t despair! M-Net’s got Friday night movies lined up to keep you entertained every weekend. Check out this month’s line-up and tune in every Friday at 21:00.

One Life

3 January
The great Sir Anthony Hopkins stars as Nicholas Winton, an English humanitarian who rescued 669 children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia shortly before the outbreak of World War II. South African born actor Johnny Flynn plays the younger Winton and Helena Bonham Carter plays his mother. Make sure you have a box of tissues handy for this one.

ISS

10 January
The next film takes us to space, specifically the International Space Station. This psychological science fiction thriller takes place in a near future, in which a war breaks out between USA and Russia, spelling disaster for the American and Russian groups at the station who must battle it out for control. Not for those with claustrophobia, but astronauts might enjoy it. The real astronauts on the actual ISS have been known to enjoy movies on the station, even horrific tales set in space like Gravity, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the Alien movies.

The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial

17 January

This military legal drama is directed by William Friedkin, a man well-equipped to direct tense scenes, having helmed The Exorcist, The French Connection, and To Live and Die in LA. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial follows a naval officer standing trial for mutiny after taking control of a ship from his commanding officer during a storm, because he believed his senior officer was mentally unstable. The film is based on a play called The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk, which was first adapted for the screen in 1954. Playing the commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Queeg, was Humphrey Bogart. In this adaptation, the role is taken on by Kiefer Sutherland. It also features one of the final performances from Lance Reddick, who sadly passed away in 2023.

Asphalt City

24 January

Asphalt City feels kind of like Training Day, but with paramedics instead of cops, and we’re in NYC instead of LA. It stars Sean Penn and Tye Sheridan and follows the gruelling and brutal reality of their work.

Night Swim

31 January

If Jaws kept you out of the ocean, Night Swim will keep you out of swimming pools. This horror film follows a suburban family who realises there’s something creepy hanging out in their pool. It’s produced by Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster who have given us freaky franchises like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, and The Conjuring … so expect scares!
